Keep a source record
- Write the claim as a specific, testable sentence.
- Record the author, date, archive or publisher, and stable reference.
- Read the surrounding material, not just a quotation.
- Compare independent records and note conflicting evidence.
- Label interpretation and uncertainty clearly.
Use a consistent standard
An image, family name, or institutional association can suggest a research question. It cannot establish a historical relationship on its own. Publish the evidence needed for a reader to evaluate the conclusion.
